Prayer and Action - A Mission Experience in Our Own Backyard

Prayer and Action Mission Experience:

Prayer and Action is a mission trip program that accomplishes 2 things:

  • offers a low cost mission trip experience and
  • provides service to the people in their own communities.

The program was named after a quote about Mary from the late, great Pope John Paul II that emphasized Mary’s dedication to both prayer AND action.
The Diocese of Savannah will be hosting our 5th year of the Prayer and Action mission program! This year we will be working in Savannah, GA and will be hosted by Saint Peter the Apostle Parish on Wilmington Island.
The program will reach out to various communities of the Savannah area, providing for those most in need. This is done by the laboring hands and the open hearts of high school students and their adult leaders. The most important aspect of Prayer & Action is the evangelization and inspiration of the youth, which is the fruit of their prayer and labor.
Throughout the week the students will paint, clean, do yard work, and perform other meaningful tasks for the poor, disabled, and elderly. The students will spend the week in an atmosphere that is free of distractions which will foster their faith, inspire charity, and lead them closer to Christ. The experience will also allow them to get to know other high school students from other parts of the Diocese who share their Catholic faith.
The Prayer & Action experience will be facilitated by the mission team which consists of seminarians and other dynamic young adults.
This team and the parish adult leaders will be with the students at the worksites, working side-by-side with them. In the evenings the team will lead Collatio, the retreat portion of Prayer & Action. Collatio is perhaps the most important part of the day as the students play, worship, and grow together in Jesus Christ.

Prayer and Action Frequently Asked Questions:

What if a young person has little or no home repair experience?
As long as young people come with a servant's attitude, there is no problem involving them in home repair projects. We match skills to projects. There is plenty of work that needs to be done, such as painting, which takes little to no experience. Young people are not asked to participate in projects they are not equipped to handle but will be given the opportunity to learn new skills if they so desire.

How well supervised and staffed is Prayer & Action?
The Prayer & Action team takes supervision and safety seriously. Besides the Prayer & Action team, each group is required to bring one adult sponsor for every seven young people to provide supervision at the worksites and at the parish. The Prayer & Action team will not involve young people in any kind of dangerous project. No one will be allowed to use power tools. Every participant is asked to bring protective safety gear. To compensate for the hot weather, workers are supplied plenty of liquids to drink and frequent breaks. Home repair projects are well organized and prepared. First-aid kits and emergency care instruction will be available at every work site. Every safety precaution is exercised.

What about Transportation?
Each group will have to provide their own transportation to the initial location and to and from worksites throughout the week.  Volunteers are always appreciated.

Who needs a background Check?
Prayer & Action, in compliance with Diocesan policy, requires that any adult chaperone (21 and older) undergo VIRTUS training and background check.   The background check and compliance are covered if the adult has gone through and kept up to date with the "VIRTUS" training and is the same required of any adult who volunteers with youth in a parish or school setting.  If you group is from outside the Diocese of Savannah please contact our Safe Environment Office for more information.

What benefits are there in experiencing a mission trip?
A week long mission experience can be life changing. Although opportunities are set up to help those living in communities we serve, many times it is those of us who are doing the service that are affected the most. In order to see God's face more clearly it is often good for us to break free from the pressures and the busy schedule of our daily lives. This week of service allows these participants to do just that!

What spiritual opportunities do the teens have?

  • Daily Mass
  • Eucharistic Adoration
  • Daily Rosary
  • Meditative prayer
  • Liturgy of the Hours
  • Reconciliation
  • Faith sharing times
  • Dialogue with Seminarians, Religious and other Adults intentional about their vocations.

Do you know of people in the Savannah Area in need?

We are looking for wonderful places to serve the elderly, needy and disabled with things such as:

  • painting,
  • cleaning,
  • yard work,
  • minor repairs,
  • working at food kitchens,
  • inner-city VBS, etc.

Those in need do not need to be Catholic so please let us know about anyone in the Savannah area who is in true need.  This can be a great experience to all, as our youth get to know the people they are helping.

If you would like to apply for help during the two weeks of Prayer and Action, please fill out an application form and someone will be in touch with you.

For any questions, please contact Leigh Ebberwein at or 912-308-2602.
