April 18, 1995 Ordained and installed as Bishop of Savannah
1995 Dedication of Holy Family Church, Metter

1996 Institutes Diocesan Leadership Visitations to Seven Deaneries
1996 Savannah Deanery Self-Study leads to merger of Blessed Sacrament and Nativity of Our Lord parishes; merger of St. Anthony of Padua Parish and Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish.

1998 June First ad limina visit to Rome
1998 October Diocesan pilgrimage to Rome

2000 Opens St. Frances Cabrini School in Savannah
2000 Resurrection of our Lord Church, Savannah established
2000 Rededication of $11 million Cathedral of St. John the Baptist restoration;100th anniversary of its dedication. Also 150th anniversary of Diocese of Savannah. Bishop Gartland Awards instituted to recognize contributions of the laity.

2001 Elected chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Marriage and Family Life

2002 Former Diocesan priest Wayland Brown pleads guilty to sexual abuse of minors. His arrest leads to multimillion dollar lawsuit settlements against the diocese.

2003 Rededication of Saint Teresa Church, Albany
2003 March Celebrates Funeral Mass of Sister Philomena Fogarty, murdered in Pine Mountain
2003 May Approved update of diocesan child sexual abuse policy first adopted in 1983.
2003 October Arsonist sets fire to Cathedral altar destroying the bishop’s chair and pulpit. “What was destroyed can be replaced,” Bishop tells the parishioners at Mass.
2003 October Disciples in Mission evangelization program inaugurated.
2003 Dedication of Saint Teresa Avila parish Life Center, Grovetown

2004 Second ad limina visit to Rome

2005 Dedication of St. Patrick Church, Perry – new church in Kathleen, GA
2005 Celebrates Funeral Mass of seminarian Darius Zurek, who died in traffic accident.

2006 One in the Spirit, a diocesan wide celebration of the Catholic faith held in Perry, Georgia.
2006 Named a member of the Bishops’ Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People; elected to the Board of Catholic Relief Services.
2006 March Dedication of St. Paul, Douglas

2007 Dedication of Sacred Heart Church, Warner Robins
2007 Dedication of Christ the King Church, Pine Mountain

2008 February Named National Bishop Promoter, Apostleship of the Sea
2008 April Elevates five priests to the designation of Monsignor
2008 April Sends documentation of the case for beatification of five Georgia martyrs to the Vatican
2008 November Second One in the Spirit gathering draws 4,000 people to Perry.

2009 Dedication of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Folkston
2009 Opens Villa Marie Center at the site of the former Camp Villa Marie, Isle of Hope.

2010 April, Submits letter of resignation upon 75th birthday
2010 April Dedication of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, St. Marys
2010 May Low enrollment forces closing of St. Michael School on Tybee Island.
2010 June St. Mary’s Home in Savannah closes because of reduced placement of children
2010 December Diocesan schools receive joint accreditation
2010 December Launches Catholics Come Home to reach out to inactive Catholics
